What each link type means
The rel attribute on a link tells search engines how you vouch for the page you link to. Here is what the checker counts.
Dofollow
A plain link with no rel qualifier on a page that allows its links to be followed. It can pass authority — the kind most link building aims for.
<a href="…">Nofollow
Asks search engines not to count the link as an endorsement. Also applies to every link when the page has a robots “nofollow” rule.
rel="nofollow"Sponsored
Marks paid placements, ads and affiliate links. Google asks for it on any link you were paid or compensated for.
rel="sponsored"UGC
User-generated content: links in comments, forum posts and reviews that the site owner did not write.
rel="ugc"How to use the results
Vet a link before you pay or pitch
Check a publisher’s page: if most outbound links are nofollow or sponsored, a dofollow placement there is unlikely.
Audit your anchor keywords
See which keywords your own page links with. Too many exact-match anchors to one page looks unnatural.
Find accidental nofollow
Spot internal links marked nofollow, or a robots meta rule that stops search engines following every link.
Map who a page links to
The linked domains tab shows every site the page vouches for, with how many of those links are dofollow.
Export everything to CSV
Download every link with its anchor, domain and type to share with a client or a writer.
Re-check after edits
Changed rel attributes or anchors? Run the check again — results refresh every six hours.
Backlink checker questions
Is this backlink checker free?
Yes. You can check 20 pages a day without an account. Domain Rating and traffic come from a paid data provider, so those numbers have their own small daily limit and are cached for a week per domain.
What is a dofollow link?
A normal link with no rel="nofollow", "sponsored" or "ugc" attribute, on a page that does not tell search engines to ignore its links. It is the kind of link that can pass authority to the page it points to.
What is the difference between nofollow, sponsored and UGC?
All three ask search engines not to treat the link as an endorsement. rel="sponsored" marks paid or affiliate links, rel="ugc" marks links in comments and forum posts, and rel="nofollow" is the general version. A link can carry more than one, so the counts can overlap.
Which keyword is each link on?
The keyword of a link is its anchor text — the clickable words. The Anchor keywords tab groups every anchor on the page, shows how often it is used and how many of those links are dofollow. Image links use the image’s alt text.
Why does a link show as nofollow when it has no rel attribute?
The page itself can say “nofollow” in a robots meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag header. When it does, search engines ignore every link on the page, so the checker counts them all as not followed and tells you why.
Does dofollow mean the link helps my rankings?
Not on its own. Search engines also weigh the page’s relevance, quality and whether it is indexed. This tool reports what is in the page’s HTML — it never claims a link is indexed or guarantees ranking value.
What is the difference between a page report and a whole-site report?
Paste a page address (with a path, like example.com/blog/post) to see the links on that one page. Paste a bare domain (example.com) and the checker scans the homepage plus up to 15 internal pages, adds every link up, lists each external link once with how many pages carry it, and shows the strongest sites that link to the domain. You can switch between the two on the results.
Can I check links on a page that loads with JavaScript?
The checker reads the HTML the server sends, like most search engine crawlers do on their first pass. Links that only appear after JavaScript runs may be missing. The free LinkHunter Chrome extension reads the page as you see it in your browser.
