What “free directory submission” really means

Free directory submission means getting your business or website listed on online directories without paying a listing fee. The phrase covers two very different offers: a free list of sites you work through yourself, or a done-for-you service that submits on your behalf at no cost to you.

Most results for this search are lists — “200+ free directory submission sites” and similar. A list is free to read, but the work is still yours. You open each site, check whether it still accepts submissions, create an account, fill in the same details again and again, and come back weeks later to see what was approved. Many long lists were compiled years ago. Some directories on them have closed, stopped moderating or now accept anything, which makes a link from them worthless or worse.

The second kind of offer is a free trial of a service. Someone else picks the directories, prepares the listings and submits them. That saves time, but it only helps if the directories are chosen carefully. Google’s own spam policies list “low-quality directory or bookmark site links” as an example of link spam, so a free blast to hundreds of random directories can do more harm than good.

LinkHunter’s free tier is the second kind, done the careful way: a small number of hand-made submissions on directories that match your category and country, tracked from queued to published, with a live URL as proof for every listing that goes up.

Who the free tier is for

  • Local businesses that want their core map and review profiles set up properly before spending anything.
  • New websites, SaaS products and startups that need to be findable by name on the directories their buyers use.
  • Agencies and consultants who want to see the quality of our submissions on their own business before using a package for clients.
Your free allowance

Start with 5. Earn up to 10.

Every verified business gets 5 free submissions. Two simple steps, both of which also make your listings better, raise that to the maximum of 10.

5 free submissions

Create an account and confirm your email. One free trial per verified business, no card and no payment details.

+2 for a complete profile

Add your address or service area, phone, logo, social links and a long description of 150+ characters. Complete profiles are rejected less often.

+3 for two competitors

Name two competitors. We check where similar businesses are already listed, which points us to the directories your buyers actually browse.

How the free tier works

From audit to live listing URL

  1. 1

    Run the free audit

Enter your website. The audit estimates your category and country and counts the catalog directories you are eligible for.

  2. 2

    Create an account

Sign up and confirm your email. That unlocks your 5 free submissions.

  3. 3

    Complete your profile

Write your business details once. An AI-assisted draft helps, and you review every word.

  4. 4

    Pick your directories

Choose from directories matched to your business. Nothing is submitted without your approval.

  5. 5

    Track to published

Our team submits by hand. Each listing moves from queued to published, with the live URL saved as proof.

What’s included free, and what isn’t

The free tier includes the full Directory Boost process on a small scale; it excludes paid directory fees and any guarantee of publication or rankings. Here is the complete list, so there are no surprises later.

Free directory submission: included and not included
Included freeNot included
Free directory audit of your websiteDirectories that charge their own listing fee
5 hand-made submissions, up to 10 with bonusesMore than 10 free submissions per business
AI-assisted business profile you review and approveA second free trial for the same business
Matching to directories that fit your category and countryDirectories outside your category or country
Duplicate check before each submissionGuaranteed publication — each directory moderates independently
Status tracking and the live listing URL once publishedGuaranteed Google rankings or AI mentions
Your approval before anything goes outWriting, buying or faking reviews — ever

Some directories need the business owner to finish verification — Google Business Profile, for example, verifies ownership by postcard, phone or video. When a directory needs something only you can do, the submission moves to “Needs your input” and the dashboard tells you exactly what is missing.

What we don’t promise

We don’t guarantee that any directory will publish your listing, and we don’t guarantee rankings. We don’t pay directory fees without asking you, and we never submit a listing you haven’t approved.

Free business listing sites

Free directories worth doing first

Before niche sites, cover the platforms people already use to find businesses. Each of these offers a free basic listing and is part of our catalog (502 directories in our catalog today). Which ones apply depends on your category and country.

DIY with a free list vs having it done

Submitting to free directories yourself costs nothing but time; a done-for-you service trades that time for someone else’s checking, consistency and tracking. Both are legitimate. The table shows where the effort goes either way.

If you prefer to do it yourself, do it well: write one master version of your business name, address, phone and website, and paste it exactly. Start with the major platforms in your country, keep a log of every site, login and status, and revisit pending submissions every couple of weeks. That discipline matters more than the number of directories.

Protect your site

Red flags in “free submission” offers

Free is only good if it doesn’t create problems you have to clean up later. Walk away when you see these.

Hundreds of sites in a day

Bulk blasts usually mean automated tools and directories that accept anything. Google names low-quality directory links as link spam.

Guaranteed rankings

No one controls Google’s rankings. A promise of “page one” or a fixed number of dofollow links is a sales line, not a plan.

No list of where you’ll appear

If you can’t see which directories were used, you can’t check their quality or fix a listing later.

Directory networks

Dozens of near-identical directories on the same template, often with unrelated categories, exist mainly to sell links.

Spun descriptions

Auto-rewritten text full of keywords reads badly to customers and is a common reason for rejection on curated directories.

Asking for your passwords

Ownership verification belongs to you. A service should never need your main email or Google account password.

When to upgrade from free to a package

Upgrade when your free listings are published, your profile is solid and the audit still shows relevant directories you haven’t covered. There is no pressure to move on: free submissions stay tracked in your dashboard either way.

The free tier is deliberately small. It covers the first, most important listings and shows you how the process works. Most businesses have more relevant directories than that: country-specific business directories, industry sites, review platforms and software marketplaces. Paid packages exist for that wider coverage, with more monitoring time and a fuller report.

  • Stay on free if you only need the core platforms and you are happy to add the rest over time.
  • Choose Starter ($99, up to 50 submissions) when you want broad, careful coverage in one category and country.
  • Choose a larger package when you work across several categories or countries. Compare them on the pricing page.

Payment is manual and simple: you request a package in your dashboard, our team sends an invoice or payment link, and the submissions are added to your quota once payment is confirmed. There is no automatic recurring charge.

FAQ

Free directory submission questions

Is the free directory submission really free?

Yes. The free directory submission tier gives you 5 hand-made submissions with no card required. It is one free trial per verified business, on eligible directories only. Directories that charge their own listing fee are not covered, and no payment details are collected unless you later choose to request a paid package.

How do I get 10 free submissions instead of 5?

Complete your business profile, including a long description of 150 or more characters, for 2 extra submissions. Name two competitors for another 3, which helps us find directories where similar businesses are already listed. Together that brings the free allowance to 10, the maximum.

Why does LinkHunter offer free submissions?

So you can judge the quality before paying anything. You get the free audit, the directory matching and real, tracked submissions for your own business. If the work is useful, paid packages cover more directories. If it is not, you have spent nothing.

Which directories count as free?

Directories in our catalog that accept free listings and fit your category and country. Freemium directories count when the basic listing is free. Paid-only directories are excluded from the free tier, and the LinkHunter team never pays a directory fee on your behalf without asking you first.

Can I submit to free directories myself?

Absolutely. Public lists of free directory submission sites exist, and doing it yourself costs only time. The hard parts are checking which directories are still active, keeping your business details identical everywhere and tracking approvals. That bookkeeping is what our team and the Directory Boost dashboard handle for you.

Will free listings be published right away?

Not always. Many directories moderate submissions, some take weeks and some reject without giving a reason. Your dashboard shows each status — queued, submitted, pending review, published or not accepted — and records the live listing URL once a directory publishes it.

Do free directory listings help SEO?

Free listings on relevant, reputable directories help people and search engines find and confirm your business, and they can send referral visits. They are a supporting signal, not a ranking shortcut. Google treats low-quality directory links as link spam, which is why we only submit to directories that fit your business.
